Career Box
Career Box is a flexible teaching and learning career education resource delivered by both teachers and Careers Scotland advisers. It is the first national resource that offers a suite of lessons and activities ensuring a consistent, coherent approach to career education for young people aged 3-18 years.
Career Box was developed to deliver the 4 learning outcomes of Career Education in Scotland: A National Framework (Learning and Teaching Scotland, 2001):
- Awareness of self
- Awareness of opportunity
- Understanding career decision making
- Understanding transitions
Career Box supports the stages of the Career Planning Journey (below). For a larger version, please download Career Planning Journey (PDF format - 189kb)
Used in context alongside Career Box, the Career Planning Journey can encourage the development of skills in personal planning and learning by engaging young people in their own learning and self evaluation.

What are the benefits for schools, teachers and young people?
Career Box helps teachers fulfill the requirements of A Curriculum for Excellence in developing the 4 capacities within our young people to become successful learners, confident individuals, responsible citizens and effective contributors to society within the contemporary world.
Career Box provides ‘real-life, relevant contexts’ and scenarios for learning and helps to link core skills with their use in the world of work. Career Box is accessed on-line and support is provided to teachers by Careers Scotland staff. Schools are given their own unique username and password, thereafter they can make use of a variety of lessons and activities which have been mapped to the curriculum.
