Developing Information Resources

Student using a computerCareers Scotland is very keen to promote a consistent national approach to the development and management of careers information resources in schools and colleges.

Information resources need to be comprehensive, impartial, up-to-date and consistent with the needs of the users. They must be fit-for-purpose and accessible in a variety of formats.

Here are some suggestions of ways you can achieve this:

Location and Layout

The Resource Area should be in a prominent location which is easily accessible.

It should be equipped with clear and appropriate signage to encourage people to use the information resources.

The Resource Area should contain web-enabled computers to support online careers research.

Content

We have produced a recommended list of core reference books which cover the full spectrum of careers information. Find out more from Information Portfolio (Books).

Our leaflets cover a range of topics including Job Hunting, CVs and Interviews.

College and university prospectuses held in the resource area should be based on local demand. We recommend you should have at least one copy of the prospectus for:

  • all Scottish universities
  • all local and relevant specialist colleges

Storage and Display

Careers Scotland centres use the following categories to label materials:

  • Blue: Finding out about careers
  • Red: Going to college
  • Yellow: Going to university
  • Green: Applying for Work and Training
  • Orange: Taking a Year Out

Enhanced Resources

If you wish to expand your resource area you can supplement the core reference books with additional leaflets and publications:
