Regeneration

As Scotland has moved from heavy manufacturing to a more modern, diverse economy, some communities have become disadvantaged and run down.

Regeneration is about transforming deprived and disadvantaged communities and making them places where people want to work and live again.  This is done by improving the skills, job opportunities, health, housing, businesses and buildings in the area.

There are, therefore, a range of jobs available in Regeneration including architecture, health, crime prevention and many more.  Opportunities are available both in the public, private and voluntary sector.

Areas included

Regeneration requires a diverse of skills and knowledge with opportunities in a number of different industries including:

  • Construction
  • Local Government
  • Housing and Property
  • Law
  • Justice
  • Social
  • Health

Creating sustainable communities requires the collective involvement of a range of people with different skills in design, community work, property development, project management, finance, local government, planning, health, community safety and much more.  For a full list of regeneration jobs see below.

What's it like working in the Regeneration Industry?

A career in Regeneration will appeal most to those who are interested in communities and places and how to improve them.

  • There are job opportunities at all levels.
  • People with the right background or experience are in huge demand.
  • Projects are fairly short-term so there is the opportunity to move both geographically and career wise.
  • Some jobs require specific degrees that are recognised by their professional bodies – for example architecture, surveying and town planning.
  • However for most other jobs any degree can be relevant as regeneration covers such a broad range of activities.

Future Trends

Across Scotland, Community Planning Partnerships are involved in supporting community regeneration. Examples of the type of work they are involved in include tackling area based and individual poverty and helping more people access and sustain employment opportunities. Although deprivation exists to some degree in all parts of Scotland, 34% of the most deprived areas are in Glasgow, 9% in North Lanarkshire and 7% in Edinburgh.

Planned government housing investment of £1.5 billion is expected to create at least 21,500 new approved affordable homes by 2011.

The Scottish Government currently supports 6 Urban Regeneration Companies (URC) – Clydebank Rebuilt, Irvine Bay in North Ayrshire, Riverside Inverclyde, Craigmillar in Edinburgh and Raploch in Stirling and the Clyde Gateway. An Urban Regeneration Company, or URC, is a formal partnership of key representatives from the public and private sector who operate at arms length to deliver physical and economic regeneration in specific areas.
