Computer Assembly Technician

Also known as:

Assembly Technician, Computer

Introduction

Computer assembly technicians build computers from their individual parts, such as circuit boards, disk drives, cables and switches. When they have put the parts together, they test the computer and correct any faults.

Work Activities

Computer assembly technicians build complete computers from their parts. For an ordinary PC (personal computer), these include:
  • external case
  • power supply unit
  • disk drives
  • processor
  • circuit boards
  • cooling fan
  • cables and switches.

Computer assembly technicians might have to gather the necessary parts from a stockroom or warehouse. They fit the parts together then test that the finished computer is working correctly. If it is not, they carry out a series of tests to find where the fault lies, and correct it.

Technicians working for a computer manufacturer usually work on an assembly line, making large numbers of identical machines.

If they work for a smaller supplier, or a retailer, they may build each machine to a different set of specifications, as provided by the customer. In this case, assembly technicians may deal directly with customers. They might also service and upgrade existing machines.

Computer assembly technicians use tools such as screwdrivers and soldering irons, and electronic testing equipment such as multimeters and oscilloscopes.

Some components used in computers are delicate and sensitive, so technicians may wear special outer clothing to reduce the risk of contamination by dust or dirt. As static electricity can damage some circuit boards, they may have to avoid wearing certain fabrics, such as nylon, which can allow static to build up. They may also wear static-reducing items such as anti-static wristbands.

Personal Qualities and Skills

As a computer assembly technician, you will need an interest in computers and electronics. You need to be good with your hands, as many parts are small and delicate. You must be able to work quickly.

You should be methodical and able to follow written instructions precisely. You must be conscientious and careful, as mistakes made during assembly can be costly and time-consuming to put right later. If a newly-built machine does not work properly, you will need patience to persevere in identifying the problem, and fixing it.

You should be reasonably fit, as computer assembly technicians spend much of the day doing repetitive manual tasks such as soldering and inserting circuit boards. You may have to carry heavy computers or parts to and from stockrooms and workshops.

Normal colour vision is usually required.

Pay and Opportunities

The pay rates given below are approximate.

Computer assembly technicians earn in the range of £15,000 - £18,000 a year, rising to £20,000. Higher earners can make around £24,000 a year. Hourly rates are in the range of minimum wage to around £12.00 an hour.

Assembly technicians typically work a 39-hour week, Monday to Friday. Shift work and early morning starts may be required. Part-time work and overtime may be available.

There are jobs with large computer manufacturers and the firms that supply electronic parts and assemblies to them.

Adult Opportunities

It is illegal for any organisation to set age limits for entry to employment, education or training, unless they can show there is a real need to have these limits.

Skills and abilities gained in other electronics/microelectronics assembly or production work are useful.

Modern Apprenticeships may be available in some areas.
