Young student's bursary

If you are a ‘young student’ living and studying in Scotland for a full time HE course you may be able to apply for a "young student bursary". This non-repayable student bursary, which can replace part of the student loan is administered by the Student Awards Agency for Scotland (SAAS).

A ‘young student’ is defined as someone who, on the first day of the course:

  • is not 25 or over
  • is eligible for help with tuition fees
  • is not married
  • has not been self-supporting through earnings or benefits for any 3 years previously

The amount of the bursary depends on your family income. The maximum award is £2,575

You are entitled to the highest amount of £2,575 a year if your household income is £18,820 or less a year. The bursary will go down to £2,011 a year for a household income of £22,000.  For a household with income over £33,330 a year your living-cost support will be entirely through a student loan. The amount of loan available will go down as your household income goes up.

You may also be eligible to claim for non-repayable supplementary grants such as travelling expenses. These are income-assessed, and are again dependant on your own and your parents' income.
