The Path is Green case study - Simon

Being involved in cutting-edge work that not only leads the renewables industry in Scotland but the whole world is just one exciting aspect of Simon Robertson's career with npower renewables based in Perth.

As a Renewable Energy Scheme Developer, Simon project manages new hydroelectric and marine energy ventures as part of npower's commitment to meeting the UK's current and future electricity needs from sustainable, environmentally-friendly resources.

Simon's move into a green job first began with an enjoyment of physics at school. He went on to study an MSci in maths and physics at University before becoming a software engineer.

It was while in this role that Simon decided he would like to work in the environmental field and he went on to pursue further study that resulted in a dissertation titled "Renewable energy in the Western Isles –an assessment of the potential impact of renewable energy developments on the prevalence of fuel poverty."

In an industry that is evolving at an incredible pace, Simon's work with npower renewables has already seen him involved with hydro power technology and environmental issues while recently the focus has moved to wave and tidal energy schemes.

One such venture is the development of a wave energy project on the Isle of Lewis. He has been involved in working with the local community, the authorities and npower's industrial partner in gaining planning consent for the project.

Simon said:

"There are wide benefits to the work I am doing in that the projects are designed to be at the forefront of tackling climate change. This is a big motivator for me, since it makes the job valuable and worthwhile. I get a great deal of personal satisfaction from this, as well as the buzz and excitement of being involved in an important and expanding industry."
