The path to success

The Path is Green, Career Scotland's campaign to raise awareness of green jobs among young people, is proving hugely popular with over 70,000 people visiting the campaign's resource pages in the last four months.

Launched outside the Scottish Parliament on 12 May by BBC weather forecaster Heather Reid, the campaign aims to help young people prepare for the 50,000 green jobs that are expected to be created over the next 10 to 15 years.

A key feature of the resource pages has been Career Paths which enables visitors to explore a wide range of jobs in the areas of Wind, Bio-mass, Water/Hydro/Marine, Micro renewables and Conservation, Ecology and Sustainability. The simple click through process helps young people to find out what subjects they require at school and the qualifications they can take at University.

Careers Scotland has adopted a highly innovative approach for communicating with young people that has involved Social Networking Sites, an animated movie on YouTube and a green jobs themed viral game.

Willy Roe, Chairman of Skills Development Scotland, said:

"We have been delighted with the response to The Path is Green. We want to make learning about careers a fun thing for young people to do and the approach we adopted confirms just how important it is to communicate with young people using routes that they are familiar with and have integrated into their everyday lives."
