Multi-million pound investment to recruit staff

For Edinburgh-based company, REpower UK Ltd, exceptional growth and a multi-million pound investment in the UK means that recruiting and finding staff is a full time job.

The company, which is the UK sales and service arm of REpower Systems AG, one of the leading manufacturers of onshore and offshore wind turbines, has been recruiting for staff in project management, engineering and sales.

Managing Director Henning von Barsewisch is in no doubt that recruitment has become the primary bottleneck for the growth of the renewables industry.

"As an industry we are offering exciting, purposeful careers with good salaries and we need to encourage wider interest, especially among young people," said Henning.

He is now preparing himself for a fresh round of recruitment offers, with positions coming up for Business Development Manager, Project Manager, Electrical Engineer, Project Controller, Service Engineers and Service Manager.

Henning, who sits on the board of the BWEA, the UK's wind, wave and tidal trade association, is helping the industry meet the challenge head on and is currently chairing a working group on skills and education.

This group is examining how the skills gap can be addressed to help companies fill positions while also promoting the wide range of opportunities that are being created by the industry. It has also commissioned new research into the shortages.

Henning said: "Particularly in the field of engineering, there are not enough qualified people to satisfy every sector and that is having a significant impact on the ability of renewables to grow.

"REpower UK has experienced this first hand and we are investing a great deal of time, including working closely with Heriot Watt and StrathclydeUniversities, to highlight the excellent career opportunities.

"We are fortunate that the renewables industry offers meaningful jobs – what could be more rewarding than dedicating your career to making the environment more sustainable?

"However, if Scotland is to fully realise the potential of its natural resources, urgent action must be taken to solve the skills gap; only then will we benefit our environment and our economy."
