References on your CV

References are usually asked for by an employer. They are provided by referees.  Referees are people who know you and can give employers information about your recent school, college or work history. In some cases a character referee can be used who knows you from a hobby or interest (e.g. sports coach).

If you have recently left school, college or university, one should be academic (teacher or lecturer) and one work-related, or a character referee if allowed.

If you left education a number of years ago you should list at least one work related referee and possibly a character referee if relevant. If a reference from your immediate manager is not possible, use someone else in the organisation.

  • In most cases list two referees.
  • Give their title and full contact address with e-mail and telephone number.
  • Always ask for their permission first.

If not specifically asked for, it can be acceptable to state ‘References available upon request’.
