Introduction

State the reason why you are writing. If speculative, explain the type(s) of work you are interested in. If advertised, indicate source of advertisement and date. Keep it short.

The content section

Be specific about why you are interested in the position. Briefly summarise some of your strongest qualifications to do the work. Remember to consider this from an employer’s point of view. Show what you have to offer the employer.

Conclusion

Refer the reader to the CV or the application form you are enclosing. Declare an interest in an interview and offer to provide further information upon request. If you are unemployed, you may wish to state that you are ‘immediately available’ (it’s a potential advantage over employed rivals).  Don’t underestimate the power of this paragraph.
