After the interview

Checklist

As soon as the interview is over, it is a good idea to go back over the interview while it is still fresh in your memory:

Ask yourself:

  • Which questions did I answer well?
  • Which questions did I answer badly?
  • Was I asked any questions for which I was not prepared?
  • Is there anything I wish I had said?
  • Is there anything I can do to improve my chances - learning new skills, gaining further experience e.g. through voluntary work

Did I:

  • Arrive on time
  • Dress properly
  • Shake hands confidently
  • Avoid nervous mannerisms
  • Answer questions fully
  • Talk about previous relevant experience
  • Highlight my special strengths
  • Emphasise how I am suited to this job
  • Look at interviewer during the interview
  • Thank the interviewer and shake their hand at the end

Feedback

Now you must wait. If you have not heard after a week or so you could try to find out if the job has been filled.

There may have been a lot of competition for the job, so do not take it personally if you are unlucky this time.

If you did not get the job try to work out why. You could ask the employer. Be honest with yourself. If you keep getting turned down at interviews ask Careers Scotland staff for help - they should be able to advise you on your interview technique.

If you are not successful in getting the job, then receiving feedback on your interview performance can be a useful tool for improving your performance next time. Most Human Resources professionals recognise that feedback is essential for self-development and will be happy to accommodate your request.

Try to think of each interview as a chance to learn and improve, not just as an opportunity to get a job.

Been offered the job?

Congratulations!

If you are currently in work and wish to accept the job offer you will have to resign your present post.
