How to prepare for an interview
Understand the job
It is important to understand about the job you are applying for. If you don’t know about the job, how can you do it?
Some employers will send a job description along with the application form. Read this carefully before the interview. Being able to study a job description beforehand allows you to identify the areas in which you match what the employer has asked for. Re-read your application form or CV carefully to see how they match.
If your application instructions did not include a job description try to speak to someone doing a similar job, or visit the Find out about your chosen job or course section of our website.
Know the employer
It is important to show that you have done some research into the company. This emphasises your enthusiasm for the vacancy and shows that you can use your initiative in gathering information. Talk to someone who works there or use the internet.
Practical Issues
- Check where the interview is and how to get there
- Aim to arrive ten minutes before the interview
- Dress neatly
- Take your letter inviting you to interview and a copy of your application form or CV
