Leisure time

You'll never be bored on-board!

As with any on–shore career, the working day does stop. When on board, you will be working to shifts, alongside your fellow crew–mates but this will vary from ship to ship and voyage to voyage.

So what will you get up to when you've got some spare time between shifts at sea?

You'll be expected to keep up with your studies and many students find their own cabin helps a lot. But 'all work and no play' isn't an ideal combination.

One of our students had so many different nationals on his ship that he was the only Scot in a crew full of Norwegians, Poles and Filipinos. Soon they were all getting on like old buddies. They shared a passion for football and were a bit fed up because their voyage meant missing the football World Cup. The captain came up with the solution - screened highlights of every game on the ship's DVD player.

Some ships are big enough to have gyms where the crew can work out. Some ships have areas that are big enough for a five–a–side pitch. If you're a fitness junky you can always find somewhere to jog.

You can take your laptop if you like, but no computer game can match the excitement of the real adventure you're experiencing on the high seas.

And as with all students, you will find plenty of things to occupy yourself when you are on-shore in Singapore, Miami or Buenos Aires!
