The annual graduation ceremony for cadet officers took place in Glasgow on June 20th, 2008. Held at the St. Francis Centre in Glasgow and attended by a large audience of parents and friends, some 77 graduates, from the 144 who graduated in 2008, received their certificates from Ian McMahon, Head of Aerospace, Defence & Marine for Scottish Enterprise, Scotland's principal economic development agency. The agency is working with the shipping industry to actively promote the opportunities that exist for people in the industry, both at sea and ashore.
The graduating class included people from both the UK and around the world who chose to study for a variety of qualifications at Glasgow College of Nautical Studies. GCNS is recognised worldwide as a leading centre of training for the maritime sector.
The graduating class included 44 people who received a Higher National Diploma Mechanical Engineering, 44 who obtained a Higher National Diploma Nautical Science, 23 who qualified as Chief Mate or Master, 24 who qualified as Officer of the Watch and 5 Post Graduate Deck Cadets.
