Information for parents of Asylum Seekers

Girl smiliingThis information has been developed for you to help your son or daughter at the important stage of moving on from secondary school.

We want to ensure that young asylum seekers are supported to develop lifelong career planning skills so they can make the most of their potential regardless of the outcome of their application for asylum. We also want to ensure that you and your family are fully informed about all the options and supported to achieve these.

What are the options for my son or daughter after leaving school?

In autumn 2007, the Scottish Government made changes to allow young asylum seekers to access full time Further and Higher Education without having to pay tuition fees. However, they do have to meet certain requirements.

How can I help my son or daughter to develop their career?

Find out more from Helping your children with their career.

How can my son or daughter get advice in school?

All school leavers are guaranteed a meeting with Careers Scotland staff to check on their plans. Pupils will also receive information and advice about career planning through lessons and events organised by Careers Scotland staff in the school.

School pastoral care staff can also refer a young person to Careers Scotland. Young people are encouraged to take responsibility for their own career planning, however as a parent, you can accompany your son or daughter to their careers interviews if you wish. If you need an interpreter you should tell the person who is arranging the appointment and this can be organised through the school.

What if my son or daughter has already left school?

If your son or daughter has already left school, they can call into any of the Careers Scotland centres to discuss their career plans. You do not generally need to make an appointment. However if you need an Interpreter you will need to make an appointment.
