The Nuffield School Bursary Scheme
The Nuffield School Bursary scheme is aimed at 5th year school pupils who are interested in the sciences, technology or engineering. The aim is to allow the students to carry out a 4-6 week research or development project in universities, colleges, industry, research or conservation organisations during the summer vacation. The students are awarded a bursary payment of £75 per week from the Foundation. The students are required to submit a report at the end of the placement. The students can be recruited in a couple of ways: The regional co-ordinator obtains the offer of projects from organisations and this information is sent out to the schools in that local area. Interested students apply by completing an application form, a copy of which is sent to the appropriate supervisors. The supervisors then consider the applications and select the student for their project. Start/finish dates and hours of work (normally 9-5 each day) are then agreed between the student and supervisor. Alternatively, students can find their own placement but they must inform the regional co-ordinator before they make any final arrangements. Application forms and guidance notes for students and supervisors can be obtained from the regional co-ordinator. A celebration event is held at the end of August/early September, where all the students throughout Scotland are invited to display their work in poster form. This is an informal day and is an opportunity for the students to show off their work to teachers, supervisors and invited guests.More information on the scheme can be found on the Nuffield Foundation website.
