Stephanie Stevenson is crowned
Scotland’s ‘Most Enterprising Student’
Stephanie Stevenson, a 20 year old physics student from Lerwick and who studies at Aberdeen University, has been crowned Scotland’s ‘Most Enterprising Student’ 2006. Stephanie was supported by Careers Scotland Shetland.
Stephanie took part in the Shell Step programme and spent the summer researching and developing high energy fuel blocks using recycled materials for COPE Ltd, a social enterprise based in Lerwick. Yesterday, at an awards ceremony organised by Shell Step to celebrate the achievements of all the students who took part in the scheme, Stephanie was chosen as the overall winner by a panel of judges.
Sarah Barclay, a 21 year old marketing student from Hamilton who attends Strathclyde University, was named as runner up for her work with Bikepod Ltd, based in her home town. She will join Stephanie at the Shell Step UK Final in London on the 17 October 2006.
Stephanie said:
“I can’t believe that I’ve won, it’s an amazing feeling. I really enjoyed doing my project and have got so much experience out of it, and to win the Scottish title is just fantastic.”
Stephanie will now go through to the national event where she’ll face winners from across the UK. She added:
“I never thought I’d get to the Scottish final, and once I’ve got over the excitement of today I’ll have to start thinking about the next stage of the competition. I want to thank Frank Millsopp at COPE Ltd who supported me throughout the project and helped me succeed.”
James Smith, Chairman of Shell UK said,
“The Shell Step programme is about giving students relevant and meaningful experience of the world of work which in turn makes them more attractive to future employers while their host companies report a significant impact on the bottom line. I wish Stephanie and Sarah well at the UK Final and, of course, in their future careers.”
Frank Millsopp, managing director at COPE Ltd said:
“We are simply delighted, firstly with what Stephanie has achieved over the summer and secondly by her reaching the UK Final. The Shell Step scheme is a fantastic programme, this is the fourth year we have taken part and I would definitely recommend it to other local companies. COPE Ltd will be taking part again next year if we have a project that needs completing.”
WEA Scotland completed the night by picking up the Shell Step Scottish Agency of the Year award. Kathleen Richardson, Lanarkshire Area Manager for WEA Scotland said,
“This is our first year as Shell Step agents and to win the Agency of the Year award is thrilling.”
Shell Step is a direct response to the challenge that faces tens of thousands of UK graduates when they move from the world of study into employment. The programme gives students relevant and meaningful experience of the world of work and is the UK's leading creator of tailored placements for students in small and medium-sized businesses.
Shell Step is a 21st Century placement scheme. Students who take part in the programme are more attractive to future employers and the participating companies report a significant impact on the bottom line.
Shell UK believes that more should be done to support the introduction of high quality placements.
