Careers Scotland Launches its First Excellence Awards

Careers Scotland announced today (31 October 2006) that it is to hold its first Excellence Awards to celebrate the positive and diverse range of career planning activities taking place throughout Scotland.

The Careers Scotland Excellence Awards 2006 will be held on Wednesday 8 November 2006 at Glasgow Science Centre. The awards will publicly recognise excellence in career education and partnership with business and community groups as well as celebrating the progress of young people and adults who have had support from Careers Scotland.

Broadcaster George Bowie will host the awards ceremony and the event is expected to attract an audience of more than 250 guests from across the Scottish education, learning and business communities.

Careers Scotland offers a range of career planning and information services to help people of all ages to maximise their career potential.Its aim is to equip people living in Scotland with the skills to make well informed career decisions throughout their lives.

Christina Allon, director of Careers Scotland in the Scottish Enterprise area, said:

"We believe that it is important to recognise the many achievements of individuals, schools, colleges, community based agencies and businesses who are involved in career planning activities across Scotland."

Such activities are developing the career-resilience of the population from the Scottish Borders to the Shetland Isles and that is great news."

There will be six awards presented on the evening and the following candidates have been short listed as finalists:

Business Partnership Award

  • BP, Grangemouth
  • Drumchapel Arts Workshop, Glasgow
  • L’Aperitif Restaurant, Stranraer

Career Education Award

  • CaddonfootPrimary School, Galashiels
  • EastbankAcademy, Glasgow
  • St Andrew’s RC Secondary, Glasgow
  • Smithycroft Secondary, Glasgow

Community Partnership Award

  • Angus Literacy and Numeracy Partnership
  • Glasgow City Council Vocational Unit
  • Strathclyde Police: North Lanarkshire Division, Cumbernauld Area

Individual Excellence Award (under the age of 20)

  • Hayleigh Barclay, Prestwick
  • Glenn Butler, Kirkcaldy
  • Stuart McLeod, Prestonpans

Individual Excellence Award (over the age of 20)

  • Billie Dishington, Duns
  • Hugh Hoolighan, Glasgow
  • Roy McCandlish, Falkirk

One of the winners from the above categories will be chosen as the Overall Winner of the Careers Scotland Excellence Awards 2006.

The Excellence Awards will support the Institute of Careers Guidance UK’s Annual Conference which will be held in Glasgow on 9 and 10 November this year.
