Sector Skills Councils
Profiles have been produced for each Sector Skills Council, which give comprehensive Scottish-specific information on key sectors, employment, recruitment, wages, skills and workforce demographics.
The information includes Key Sectors and Employers (sub-sectors in decline, new and emerging sub-sectors, leading employers and organisations in Scotland); Employer Size; Forecasts (new jobs/growth, replacement demand); Jobs/Occupations (gender breakdown, ethnic breakdown, flexible work patterns, age of the workforce); Recruitment (recruitment methods, recruitment difficulties, information on selection methods); Skills (basic skills, work-based skills, skills levels of workforce, skills gaps, skills shortages); Wages (by sector/sub-sector, by job/occupation).
PDFs of each profile are on the Alliance of Sector Skills Councils website.
Gender Report from TUC
A report Still More (Better Paid) Jobs for the Boys - prepared for the TUC Young Members Forum shows that while more apprenticeship places have opened up for women in general apprenticeships are still strongly divided along gender lines.
Individual Learning Accounts
(Extract from ILA Scotland website)
ILA Scotland is a Scottish Government scheme for anyone 18 or over who lives in Scotland. The amount of funding you receive will depend on how much you earn.
- ILA Scotland £200 offer
If you earn £18,000 a year or less you can apply for an individual learning account that will give you up to £200 a year towards learning something new. There’s a wide range of courses on offer and you can study with any approved ILA Scotland learning provider, including learning centres, local colleges, universities and private training companies. - ILA Scotland £100 offer
If you earn more than £18,000 a year you can now apply for an individual learning account that will give you up to £100 a year to put towards a range of courses. Many of the courses will help you to develop the skills that employers are looking for - you can build your computer skills, or even improve your communication and customer handling skills. You can study with a range of learning providers who are approved by ILA Scotland and all courses approved for £100 funding will lead to a recognised certificate or qualification.
The money is not a loan – so you won’t have to pay it back. For further information call the ILA Scotland helpline free on 0808 100 1090.
