Full-time employment

What is it?

  • Paid full-time work.
  • Most people work for an employer.
  • Employers vary in size from small businesses with only two or three staff to multi-national organisations with thousands of people working for them worldwide.

Employers can be:

  • In the private sector the business is financed by making a profit from the activities of the company.
  • In the public sector the employer is funded by the government (central or local) Your taxes are used for this.

Suitable for you?

Employers usually require specific skills and/or qualifications for each job they offer. Your Employer may offer different types of training or learning to help you progress in your job. Some types of training require you to be in a job first before you can progress.

Pros and Cons

  • Regular hours of work (although sometimes anti-social)
  • Steady pay
  • Employment legislation which protects employees
  • You may be part of a bonus or company pension scheme
  • You may have little input into the running of the company
  • Financial rewards may be modest over your working life
