Part-time employment
What is it?
- A part-time worker is someone who works less hours than a full-time worker. There is no set number of hours that makes someone part-time, but a full-time worker usually works 35 hours or more per week.
- Most people work for an employer.
- Employers vary in size from small businesses with only two or three staff to multi-national organisations with thousands of people working for them worldwide.
- There are local byelaws which apply to children under school leaving age who work part-time.
Suitable for you?
Part-time work (whatever it is) can give you a taste of different work places and excellent work experience. It can be helpful in providing you with some idea of what full-time work might be possible or attractive (or perhaps not!) in the future. This, in turn, can be helpful when you're applying for a particular job. It can also provide a useful income while studying.
Pros and Cons
- Regular hours of work
- Steady Pay
- Employment legislation which protects employees
- You can fit it around studying or bringing up family
- Financial rewards may be modest
- The hours may be anti-social, for example weekends or evenings
